The Reykjavík Layover—what a great idea!
It's becoming more and more common for people to spend a layover in Reykjavík en route between North America and Europe. Some have a few hours between flights, some have up to a few days. Regardless, it's a chance to stretch your legs, see something new, relax and be inspired.
Whether you have a few hours or a full day, it's definitely worth your while. Here are some tips on maximizing your layover. These suggestions all begin and end at Keflavík International Airport.
Got six hours to kill between your flights? What's better in-between than a good leg stretch and some delicious food?
Hop on a shuttle straight into the heart of Reykjavík (there are a handful of shuttle companies that depart from the arrivals area on a regular basis) and go for a stroll. It's about 45 minutes from the airport into the city. You'll have time to walk from the famous Hallgrímskirkja church all the way down to the harbour. Then, head to Sky Lagoon for a few blissful hours of relaxation. Gaze at the endless horizon and emerge revitalized by The Ritual. You can also grab a light meal there before you head back to Keflavík in time for your continuing flight.
Blend some exploration with relaxation by checking out Sky Lagoon, the most buzz-worthy new experience in Iceland.
Follow the instructions above, and be sure to take some time in Grandi for a meal at the Grandi food hall and a visit to FlyOver Iceland—where you can take a stunning virtual flight to Iceland's most remote corners.
Then, head to Sky Lagoon, just outside of Reykjavík. This luxurious geothermal spa is located right on the coast only minutes from downtown Reykjavík. The Ritual is a relaxing journey through traditional Icelandic bathing culture and the views are stunning! Book ahead to save 10%. Then, head back to the airport feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.
If you have time for one tour of Iceland, we recommend the Golden Circle. It takes in stunning tectonic plates, geysers, waterfalls, hot springs and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In other words, jam-packed with classic Iceland wonders.
Once you're back in the city, head to Sky Lagoon in the late day for stunning and theatrical skies and major relaxation.
One great night sleep, a coffee early in the morning and you're back at the airport ready feeling inspired, relaxed and recharged—and ready to continue your voyage.
Easy, inspiring and worth every minute, any layover in Iceland is a good one.
